12 Sep 2009: Reta Fitzpatrick Cup Final: CSFC 2 Western 1
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
With so little competitive football (as a team) in the last month, we had a hit-out against the Pride on Monday night. The soul purpose of this game was to get key people (those not involved in school tournaments the previous week) minutes under their belt. Objective reached, but also a few golden nuggets would arise. Maia Vink playing in a central role, and Alice playing in a full back role. With this match out of the way, a good training session on Thursday, and a finals day breakfast, I felt that indeed we were ready to play, in what would be the most meaningful game of the entire year. The Reta is a competition so dear to many of the girls and supporters of the team. I was fortunate enough to call upon Heather Hepburn to be manager for the day and deliver a rousing speech pre-match about Reta and how much this competition means to us.
With a revised 4-3-3 formation, we set out to 'frustrate'
and 'deny space' for Western's key players, while at the same
time attack with real pace and putting their back four under
huge pressure when we didn't have the ball to avoid them
picking a pass. Talk about frustration!!! As anybody at the
game would tell you, we didn't let their dangerous players
dictate play to us, and by controlling the tempo, defending
strong and smart and pressing the life out of them, they did
not like it! We would start slightly slow, due to some
timing issues pre-match, but battled well though the early
exchanges. Once we settled into a rhythm we would score a
goal right off the training pitch. Great pressure led to a
turnover in possession, we broke quickly and exploited their
right full back through Ashleigh's pace, good delivery in the
box where Wongy made a fantastic run to find the back of the
net. Disappointingly though, 1 minute later we would concede
a goal from a corner. As I said pre-match, set pieces would
be so important for both teams, and to not pick our markers
close enough was the disappointing factor.
Walking off at half time I could see a few puzzled faces and conversations happening with senior Western players. We defiantly knew we had them rattled and felt we were defiantly starting to get on top of them. The word at half time was just more of the same, but to increase the pressure on the back four and to tighten up some small details.
The telling moment in the second half would again come from a set piece - ours this time. With great pace on the delivery, a Western player was adjudged to have handled the ball. Maia stepped up a planted into the top right hand corner (no goal keeper would have had a chance). The longer the game would continue, the more we played with real heart, passion and smarts, while the opposition were getting more frustrated, angered and looked to play more as individuals than a collective. This would be, in my opinion, the biggest difference in two sides today (all the way from our pre- match to our warm up, to the way we left the field as a unit a half time, all the way to the final whistle). And that final whistle couldn't have come soon enough with Lily being called upon in the dying stages of the game to pull off two outstanding saves.

Player of the Day: So hard to single out anyone today after
such a great team performance. Special mention to Ashleigh
for picking up the final MVP, but I would give our award to
both fullbacks (Alice and Alex) for very solid displays. The
team: Lily Alfield, Alice Foote, Adelma Matthews, Kathryn
Van Empel, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Maia Vink, Hannah
Wong, Ashleigh Ward, Monique Barker, Marcella Wood. Subs:
Isla Smith, Ariana Te Momo, Emma Proctor, Laura Merrin,
Nicole Merrin. Thanks to all the Girls for a superb season
from which we will defiantly build on next year. A special
thanks to Lee and Jim Hawkey for their continual support and
dedication not only the team but also the club. Thanks
guys!!!

With an eye on the impending Reta Fitzpatrick final in four weeks, we wanted to keep the nice development shown over the past few weeks going. Illness to Monique meant a slight re-shuffle, with Nicole starting in an unfamiliar role of centre mid – one that she performed very well at last week for 20 minutes.
Due to the fact I was away working on my International Coaching License, the team were overseen by Heather and Del for the pre match and first 25 minutes of the game until I could arrive. An early goal to Emma (8th league goal) would get us off to the perfect start. However the catch phrase today for us was to be "our standards". Walking in at halftime with the score at 1-1, I posed some simple questions to the girls. "Are you happy with your performance" and "are you happy with the team's performance". Only a handful of players could honestly say that they were, however collectively we fell well short of our standards. I'm not sure if it was the fact players were less focused due to us playing the bottom placed team, or the fact the coach wasn't present for the pre-match preparation? Whatever the answer, we went through some basic detail both in and out of possession and set the girls the target to walk back in after the next 45 minutes with a different response to the same question I had just posed.
Initially the approach didn't work with Avon scoring inside 90 seconds to go 2-1 up. However, it didn't take long for normal transmission to resume. Far more decisive and creative movement in possession resulted in opportunity after opportunity in the final third. Better communication, distances and pressure out of possession resulted in a higher turnover of ball and prevented Avon from breaking us down.
A dangerous corner from Alex led to Sally slamming home a loose ball for her second league goal of the season. Our third came from a good second run and ball over the top for Ashleigh to slide under the keeper, then a similar build up (great ball from Ari) resulted in Ashleigh rounding the keeper to finish with her weaker right foot for her 11th (team leading) league goal.
We unfortunately lost Maia to a hamstring injury early in the half, so we hope she will be right for the final in a few weeks. She was replaced by Isla, with Sorren getting her second appearance of the season replacing Emma out right. Ariana would replace Kathryn.

Player of the Day: No real standout today, but feel Sally, Del, Kathryn and Ashleigh did well, but getting through a power of thankless work Marcella [pictured] deserves the award.
The team: Lily Alfield, Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Kathryn Van Empel, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Marcella Wood, Emma Proctor, Ashleigh Ward, Nicole Merrin, Alice Foote. Subs: Isla Smith, Ariana Te Momo, Sorren Henderson, Mollie Cairns.
Next week we are have the bye.

01 Aug 2009: Western 0 CSFC 0
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
After building nicely over the past few weeks, I felt today’s game came at a good time to see where we really are at, playing league champions Western. Despite having some bad news during the week that Wongy is out for at least 4 weeks (potentially the rest of the year), we would continue to work towards the Cup Final in 5 weeks as our main focus. This however didn’t detract from the importance of producing a performance and sending a statement to our opposition that they can’t just turn up and expect 3 points. With the result no longer the priority, it was the smaller details and intentions towards playing our brand of football that I was asking for today.
With just the one change to the line up from last week (Marcella in for Wongy), we started were we left off against Bays. We competed and matched Western in most areas throughout the first half, and were able to target specific areas (and players) of the pitch where we found continued success. This was most prominent down our left flank, with Alice getting in behind her marker on numerous occasions with good effect. Her delivery was more often than not on the money, except we lack that final killer-blow inside the box. At 0-0 at the break, we were relatively happy, but had a lot to go though.
Speaking at half-time, we identified 3 areas of concern out of possession. By asking key people (Emma, Sally and the top striker) to do very specific roles, we virtually took away all their attacking options and strengths. We pressurized them, and played the majority of the half in their territory. We were also able to keep more of the ball and looked more likely to score than them. Again, we would create half chances, but it was our intention in playing the ball out from the back, the combination work and willingness of our fullbacks to get forward which really showed me (and the large crowd in support) that this group of women have come a long way, and will continue to grow as we prepare for the cup final.
Credit must go in the second half to all the girls for performing their duties very well. Nicole replaced Emma in an unfamiliar role of centre mid, but did the job of nullifying the space and time of Sara Clapham expertly. Monique showed a sense of urgency and hassled the opponent's back four all half and got great reward. It was this attitude that spread throughout the rest of the team.
Haley came on for only her second senior league appearance for Alice, and I was able to give another promising 14-year-old, Teagan MacDonald, the final 10 minutes for what was her senior debut. More demonstration of the depth this club is developing.
0-0 final score, but the most complete performance of the season.

Player of the Day: Many very commendable efforts such as Monique, Sally, Nicole, Alice, Emma and Lily, but have to give it to Del [pictured] for her work predominantly in the first half. Del broke up many promising attacks and was able to stifle the creative ability of Georgia, limiting her to an observer the entire second half.
The team: Lily Alfield, Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Kathryn Van Empel, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Marcella Wood, Emma Proctor, Ashleigh Ward, Monique Barker, Alice Foote. Subs: Isla Smith, Nicole Merrin, Teagan MacDonald, Haley McKnight.
Next week we are at home to Avon. I am away attending the International Team Coaching License, so the girls will be in the capable hands of Heather Hepburn once again.

25 July 2009: CSFC 5 FM Bays 1
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
After a much more settled week of preparation, we really looked the biz going into today's match against Ferrymead Bays. We were able to take this good momentum into the first 30 minutes, we were able to slowly control the half and eventually got reward with Hannah breaking the ever-present offside trap to round the keeper and score in the empty net. However, disappointedly so, we allowed Bays back into the match after cheaply conceding possession in our defensive third to allow their only real threat to score at the back post.
There was an air of silence in the sheds at half time, which said a lot about this group of girls. They too felt disappointed with the way the half concluded, and knowing that we had 80% of possession and 80% of territory, the cutting edge quality in all aspects of our play just simply was not there. Not to panic though, as we went through specific details and made a few alterations we came out firing in the second spell.
An early goal to Wongy (her second) helped calm the nerves, which was shortly followed by the introduction of Marcella for Ash up top. This created slightly more stability and allowed us to secure possession better. Possession really was the key today, and we certainly used it a lot more wisely the longer the game went. With slick interchange and movement, ability to get our full backs high up the pitch with the ball and more clinical passing (weight, direction) we certainly carved out some good chances. Wongy completed her hat trick on the hour mark after some nice approach play. Nicole then replaced Del, and Ariana come on for Monique, with Emma moving out to wide right.
Even though the game was under control and result secured, we still strived for more goals and attractive football. The fourth game came after 65 minutes as Emma cut in from the right and unleashed a rocket into the top left hand corner of the net. Just as I prepared to leave however, a small passage of play really said to me that the group is now capable of taking their play to the next level. After working hard this week at training, we were able to find a checking striker, support underneath the ball, then the ability to open up and drive a ball over 30 yards to bring in the upcoming back on the other side.
The fifth and final goal of the day was again clinically taken from Emma, and again I was able to leave the game in the capable hands of one of our up and coming young coaches Del.

Player of the Day: Kathryn [pictured]. For her first senior start, and marking one of the best strikers in the game, I thought she was outstanding.
The team: Lily Alfield, Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Kathryn Van Empel, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Hannah Wong, Emma Proctor, Ashleigh Ward, Monique Barker, Alice Foote. Subs: Isla Smith, Nicole Merrin, Marcella Wood, Ariana Te Momo.
Next week we are at away to Western.

18 July 2009: Halswell 0 CSFC 2
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
Again we had a less than ideal build up this week with myself and Del, Lily, Ash, Isla, Kathryn and the youth girls away at the Kanga Cup as well as coming off the bye weekend. We met at Halswell Domain with uncertainty around availability of players and fatigue. We were also able to welcome Stef White back to town for the weekend, as she progress well, up North on her course.
We began the match brightly as we attempted know the ball around and play some attractive football. With small adjustments to various distances, we were able to turn-over possession in areas we highlighted, and looked to use combinations or realising our wingers early to create chances. And chances we created, but failed to find a goal. Corners came and went, every one looking dangerous. However the longer the game went, the more Halswell came at us.
Halftime gave us the opportunity to regather ourselves and make some small adjustments. With Hannah getting her first taste of decent minutes for some time, Sally suffering form ill health, Del and Nicole not training all week, Ash and Lily playing in 6 games in Australia, and Stef and Aria returning to town after experiencing other interests, looking around the group it was going to be concentration, organisation and a willingness to work hard for each other which would see us through this match.
As predicted, Halswell threw everything they had at us in the second half, creating their share of opportunities. One in particular released their striker though on goal only for Lily to dive a full stretch to keep her clean sheet. Fresh legs were needed, so one came Stef for Sally, Kathryn for Nicole and Ari for Alice in the space of 15 minutes.
Credit must go to the girls, for they were able to deal with everything Halswell threw at them. Once we then got ourselves onto the front foot and I was confident we were not about to concede, I grudgingly departed so I could make the men’s match – leaving Super Coach Sally in charge for the final 15 minutes.
Through texts and phone calls, I can report that Ashleigh scored almost immediately after my departure (something the girls suggested I should have left earlier), followed by the icing on the cake that Hannah scored the second. Something I’m sure put a massive smile on her face to get the elusive goal she has being trying so hard for in recent weeks – more to come so watch this space.

Player of the Day: Hard one – Ash was awarded it at the after match, but I feel it also shared with Sally for her continued graft and dominance in midfield which aloud us to build so many attacks. Also played at well under 100% health.
The team: Lily Alfield, Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Nicole Merrin, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Hannah Wong, Emma Proctor, Ashleigh Ward, Monique Barker, Alice Foote. Subs: Isla Smith, Stef White, Kathryn Van Empel, Ariana Te Momo.
Next week we are at home to Ferrymead Bays.

4 July 2009: Avon 0 CSFC 5
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
With a less than ideal build up this week with people struck down with the flu (myself included) and people out of town (Ari, Stef, Marcella, Alex, Kathryn), we made the trip across to Avonhead Park with a very young-looking team. It is days like this we are thankful that we have a strong youth contingent coming through the ranks to step in and perform a role when needed – as they have done all season.
We attempted to attack the game in the same manner as we had began our pervious two matches. However, through playing a weaker opposition, playing on a smaller field and numerous changes, we were not as fluid as in past games. We quickly altered back to a more original style, which immediately brought us reward. Through good defensive work, clever passing and movement (front 4 plus Wongy) we were able to exert dominance. The first goal came from us retaining possession for a period, then freeing up speedster Ash behind the back five to beat the keeper one-on-one. The second came shortly after, with good work from Alice down the left cutting infield to slide the ball under the advancing keeper.
Wongy was then replaced up front by Mollie – Hannah was under instruction to play 25 minutes as she builds back into full recovery.
Our third came directly from a corner. With a quality delivery from Maia, Sally rose like a salmon to pick her spot to claim her first of the season.
With the game under control, and an inspirational half time talk, I departed for the men's game, leaving the girls under the capable guidance of Heather Hepburn. Chloe Jones replaced Nicole Merrin, and we were able to give a senior debut to Sorren Henderson (another of our U-15 Federation players) who replaced Maia at right fullback.
The final two goals of the game fell to Ashleigh Ward, who is certainly adding goals to her ever-growing reputation and ability. In the process she became the first non-Western player to score a hat-trick in the WPL this season.
Player of the Day: Sally Chetwin. Was our driving force in the middle of the park today. Turned over a lot of ball and combined well with the attacking group. Chipped in with a powerful header direct from a corner.
The team: Lily Alfield, Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Nicole Merrin, Isla Smith, Sally Chetwin, Hannah Wong, Emma Proctor, Ashleigh Ward, Monique Barker, Alice Foote. Subs: Chloe Jones, Mollie Cairns, Sorren Henderson, Laura Merrin.
Next week we have the bye.

27 June 2009: Reta Fitzpatrick Cup Semi-Final: CSFC 5 Halswell 0
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
After a positive showing last week, we welcomed Halswell for what was out biggest game of the season to date - Reta Fitzpatrick Semi Final. With this being a competition that means so much to not only the more senior players in the group, but also the supporters and the club, I asked club stalwart Heather Hepburn to come and address the girls prior to kickoff. She spoke about Reta, her involvement for Rangers and women's football and had the girls fired up and ready to go - Thanks Heather for your assistance!!
I handed Alice a start as reward for her continued development and understanding she had shown lately at training in an otherwise unchanged line-up to the previous week, with the idea to build on our strengths and tighten up areas we weren't so hot in. Again, like last week, we dominated the early exchanges with our controlled out of possession work, aggressive pressing and swift movement forward through the thirds. However, unlike last week, we made the pressure tell and were able to take and convert two early chances. The first came from a break down the left with good interchange (Alice and Ash) and quality delivery into a dangerous area for Emma to meet the ball at the far post for an easy tap in. The second was almost a carbon copy, again with the quality of the delivery the key and the ball ricocheted off a Halswell defender into her own net.
More of the same was to follow in the second spell, with the third goal resulting from good build up play, quick interchange and players and passes freeing up the fleet-footed Ash behind the back four and under pressure from the keeper bent the ball into the inviting net. Monique then replaced Ash, with a point to prove after being left out of the line-up for the first time this season. Her added sense of urgency and physicality helped the rest of the team strive for more goals, and for the first time this season we played a complete 90 minute match. We were also able to introduce Isla (for Maia) and welcome back Hannah Wong (or Ping Wong as she now goes by) (for Sally) to the field which we all hope will be the start of her season after a terrible run of injuries.
Two more goals were to follow, with Emma weaving some magic and slamming a low drive into the bottom corner to make it 4 (and her second), and then the ever apparent Stef White latching onto a loose ball in the midfield and unleashing a shot on the bounce which left the keeper stranded as it nestled into the side netting. What a way to cap off a dominant performance!
Player of the Day: Stef White. In her last game before heading away up
north, Stef dominated in the middle of the pitch and linked the defence
with the attack expertly.
The team: Lily Alfield, Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Nicole Merrin, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Stef White, Emma Proctor, Ashleigh Ward, Alice Foote, Marcella Wood. Subs: Isla Smith, Monique Barker, Kathryn Van Empel, Melanie Cameron, Hannah Wong.
Next week we are away to Avon 12.30pm kickoff at Avonhead Domain.

20 June 2009: CSFC 1 Western 3
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
After a well earned weekend off after 4 games in 10 days, we entertained table-topping Western to Bexley Reserve in a "6 pointer". The game genuinely represented our best and last opportunity to get ourselves back into the league title race, with a win closing the gap to 6 points at the top and a loss expanding the gap to an unrealistic 12 point gap.
We worked hard all week on a new game plan, which I must give credit to all the girls in the way they went about executing it today. We wanted to play more from the counter attack, and direct play down our left to keep ex-international Rachel Oliver off the ball. We wanted to also lure a very experienced but aged defensive block far forward up the pitch, whilst denying space for their talented ball players in the middle of the pitch and space behind our back four for the pace of their front two. Once we would turn the ball over we could therefore exploit pockets of space behind their back four which we could use the pure pace of Ashleigh and Monique to threaten on goal. For the first 30 minutes the plan worked to perfection. We turned over ball in areas we expected and counter-attacked effectively creating good chances. Unfortunately, far too commonly this year we have failed to convert pressure into goals (Marcella even had what I thought was a perfectly good goal chalked off for offside). Then for the first occasion where we got our distances slightly wrong, resulting in us not being able to apply enough pressure centrally, it meant Western were able to combine nicely and get an unopposed shot off which bet Lily to open the scoring. A second shortly followed and Western went to the break 2-0 up.
At half time we made some small adjustments to the game plan as opposed to ditching it and hitting the panic button. By tightening up the lines, and getting closer to opposition and as Jim said we got some "mongrel" into the game, we again showed we were up to the challenge. We continued to turn over ball and used the pace of the two blondes, whilst Marcella put herself about up top to set a good base, but I was impressed with our ability to determine if the counter wasn't on and revert back to playing our normal brand of football. We would look to switch the point of attack, bring in the upcoming fullback and make diagonal movements from our front four.
Alice came on for Emma after 65 minutes and not long after pressured high up the pitch (gambled) and was rewarded by turning the ball over and calmly bending it around the goalkeeper to set up a tense finish. However, before I could roll the dice to see what pressure we could create, Western hit straight back from a well taken (poorly defended????) corner kick. Young Melanie Cameron and Kathryn Van Empel replaced Steph and Del respectively and acquitted themselves well for the final 10 minutes, again showing the depth and confidence these U-15 girls are developing.
So, 1-3 it finished, but I feel it proves to us all that we are not that far away from Western and we are looking forward to meeting them again - soon!!!
Player of the Day: Maia Vink [pictured]. Had a lot of play directed down her flank.
Read the game well and dealt comfortably with most of Western's attempted
penetrating balls. Showed a good platform to attack from.
The team: Lily Alfield, Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Nicole Merrin, Alex Hepburn, sally Chetwin, Stef White, Emma Proctor, Ashleigh Ward, Monique Barker, Marcella Wood. Subs: Isla Smith, Alice Foote, Kathryn Van Empel, Melanie Cameron.
We now look forward to what will now be our biggest game of the season to date, welcoming Halswell to Bexley Reserve for the Semi-Final of the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup. 12pm kickoff!!!!!

2 June 2009: Reta Cup: Waimak 1 CSFC 5
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
No rest for the wicked when you have a full schedule of matches. However, without losing respect for our opposition, I was able to not only rest some key senior players, but also promote some of our talented youth players into the senior environment for all to see.
In came Mollie Cairns and Chloe Jones for their first senior starts, as well as Haley McKnight and Kathryn Van Empel for their senior debuts (should they get on). Rested were Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Emma Proctor, Alice Foote, Sally Chetwin and Marcella Wood. We also welcomed Hannah Wong back from a 2 week break.
With so much youthfulness out on the pitch, it was pleasing to see the experienced – yet young head – of Wongy linking with Mollie to send Ashleigh through on goal after 2 minutes. I’m sure that settled a few nerves. A very motivated Waimak side with so many playing under lights at English for the first time really enjoyed the occasion and were far from overrode playing a team in a higher league – full credit must go to them.
In saying this, today was always going to be about us, and for us to build on recent success and our brand of football. Our second and third goals fell to Monique, both from crosses from our fullbacks in the final third. Mollie then claimed her first senior goal with a well taken placed shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Haley (after 25 minutes) and Kathryn (after 35 minutes) came on in the first half and Laura (after 55 minutes) showed that they too didn’t look out of place.
Our fifth and final goal came about after some great football. We won the ball centrally, switched the point of attack (Kathryn) to the opposite upcoming back (Isla) who drove forward into the final third, who clipped a ball centrally to Haley who took a touch and laced the ball into the roof the net from 30 yards!!!!
With losing Ari to an ankle injury half way through the second half, we would play out the remainder of the game with 10 men, with Kathryn stepping forward into a central holding role which I felt she was superbat. This however left a little too much space in behind, which their best player (12-year Greer Smith – remember that name) to nick in behind us, outpace a tidied back three and bank it in off the post with time nearly up on the clock.
Player of the Day: Mollie Cairns (played very well with back to goal, retained possession and linked with her support. Also took her goal like a seasoned pro) and Kathryn Van Empel (for someone to make their senior debut and look that comfortable on the ball is a real credit. Also showed her versatility when asked to play as one of the anchor midfielders.
The team: Lily Alfield, Isla Smith, Chloe Jones, Nicole Merrin, Alex Hepburn, Ariana Te Momo, Stef White, Hannah Wong, Ashleigh Ward, Monique Barker, Mollie Cairns. Subs: Laura Merrin, Haley McKnight, Kathryn Van Empel.
We now look forward to our 4th game in 10 days when we host Halswell at Bexley on Saturday, where both sides need to win to stay in touch with Western at the top of the table.

by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
Today we travelled away to Barnett Park to play Ferrymead Bays, whilst looking for consecutive league wins for the first time this season. Without the injured Maia Vink, I had no hesitation starting 14-year old Isla Smith at left back.
A positive and committed first half display really allowed us to continue to build on key areas such as retainment of possession, interchange of the front four, support all over the pitch and getting our fullbacks in possession in the attacking third.
With Bays playing a high defensive line, plus an offside trap, we struggled to find solutions without being caught offside. And with playing in the valley, even the surfers down at Sumner would have heard the echoes of my frustrations at times. However, after a concerted half of possession and determination we led at the break through a 20 yard drive from Stef, after great build-up down the right through Alex and Monique, and a half-volley from Emma (even though I’m not convinced she knew too much about it).
The second spell was a tighter affair, with Bays throwing all they could at us to get back into the game. But the defensive organisation, understanding and pressure was enough to force Bays to settle for shots from outside the box – which we will take all day long. The third goal was just reward for the girls and fell to Marcella to slot home from 6 yards.
Player of the Day: Isla Smith. Showed great composure in possession and defended solidly in one-on-one situations. Laid a great platform to attack from.
The team: Lily Alfield, Isla Smith, Adelma Matthews, Nicole Merrin, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Stef White, Emma Proctor, Ashleigh Ward, Monique Barker, Marcella Wood. Subs: Chloe Jones, Ariana Te Momo, Alice Foote, Mollie Cairns.
We now look forward to our 3rd game in 6 days when we meet Waimakariri in the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup Tuesday 7pm at English Park.

16 May 2009: Coastal Spirit 5 Avon 0
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
Today we hosted Avon United at home for the earlier kickoff of 12pm, due to the men kicking of at 2pm for their Chatham Cup clash. Having only played Avon once this year, we approached the game with an emphasis on us, and what we bring to the table as opposed to nullifying the opposition's strengths. Although Avon are at the bottom of the table, they had picked up some young and exciting players over recent weeks, and were a team we didn’t want to take lightly.
I highlighted three things today: Pride, Patience and Possession, which would result in a Performance (the result would take care of itself). The girls really took these three words to heart and turned in a first-half display that any team would have been proud of.
Through dominating the weight of possession, and patiently controlling the tempo at which we wanted to play, we were able to move around the defensive blocks of the opposition to create areas where we wanted to exploit. Through the pace of Ashleigh and Monique on the flanks, and the strength and creativity of Marcella and Emma though the middle, our attacking crew posed question after question of the Avon side. Credit must however go to our more defensive-minded players who circulated the ball well, provided outlets, made forward supporting runs and gave angles to allow us to play out from the back. I trust Lily would have learnt a lot from this experience and so often today we used her to retain possession and start our attacks from the back. She proved to everyone (including herself) that having a goalkeeper capable of using her feet well - such a benefit for any footballing team. And football is what we played a lot of today, due to the fact we retained and were smart about the possession we had.
The first of Emma’s two goals in the first half came about good build-up play, and finding herself on the ball, in between the lines running at the defence. She turned her player inside-out and clotted the ball in the bottom corner. Our second came direct from a corner which was turned into the net by an Avon defender, but credit goes to Maia, as delivery is the key when it comes to effective set pieces. Monique was able to bundle the ball home from close range (her 4th of the year) after a flowing move and Emma took her second goal well just before the break, again after some impressive build-up work.
With the introductions of young Isla Smith (replacing Del who was outstanding today), into left back, Ariana replacing Captain Fantastic (Alex) and Alice replacing Monique, coupled with playing into the strong nor'west wind, it took us a wee while to get the fluidity back into our place. However, the girls showed that even with the small shuffle of players, the brand and style of our football remained. Marcella was able to grab her goal of the match midway through the half to cap an impressive match. I feel Alice performed creditably, providing great delivery from the left, and Maia again showed her class. One small area of concern was the amount of times we were caught offside – far too many for my liking, one even cost us a goal. An area for us to work on perhaps, but it shows the intent and movement we created all day long will trouble even the best teams in this league.
Player of the Day: Emma Proctor [pictured]. 2 well taken goals in an excellent first half display of attacking football.
The team: Lily Alfield, Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Nicole Merrin, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Stef White, Emma Proctor, Ashleigh Ward, Monique Barker, Marcella Wood. Subs: Isla Smith, Ariana Te Momo, Alice Foote, Mollie Cairns.
Next weekend we have the bye.

9 May 2009: Western 2 Coastal Spirit 1
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
Today saw us travel away to table-topping Western. With their experience and settled squad, we knew we would be in for a major tussle today. We were (as we always are) confident in our own abilities, our preparation and our collective presence and didn’t feel like the underdogs many thought we were. We certainly got what we expected.
As with most football games, the team that takes their chances will win. This was the case today, with Western putting away 2 chances to our 1. The first 15 minutes, as with all games, was a little messy and helter skelter - as both teams tried to settle into their patterns. The first real chance fell to Marcella for a pure counter attack - but her 1-on-1 shot from the edge of the box went over the advancing goalkeeper and over the bar. Almost directly after that, we failed to deal with a punt from their keeper, allowing the ball to bounce in our midfield and in our back line, resulting in their pacey forwards collecting the loose ball to slot passed a stranded Lily. You simply cannot afford to defend (not just the back 4) like that at this level and not expect to be punished.
Western's second came from a corner. With a quality delivery into the 6 yard box, their striker was first to react and commit herself to the ball and managed to slide in and increase the lead.
Shortly after, we forced our own corner, and in similar circumstances Marcella pulled a goal back for us shortly before half time.
The halftime message was reality clear and well adhered to by the team. We needed to apply pressure on their playmakers to affect the quality of their distribution, to get away from playing long balls behind their back four and controlling tempo by getting Hannah in between the lines and/or retaining possession by sending our fullbacks higher up the pitch to support the wingers and delivery quality crosses into the box.
With our ability to retain a higher percentage of possession, we certainly looked a better team in the second spell. Introductions of Ariana (for Sally), Emma (for Ashleigh) and Alice (for Stef) later in the half, really stretched a tired Western unit. We continued to press for an equaliser and ended up going three at the back to help us in that pursuit. Ultimately we were vulnerable on the counter attack and, to be fair, Western created enough chances to put the game beyond reach, but a solid second half from Lily in nets kept the game tight.
Unfortunately the equalising goal never came today, and in sport you do lose at times. Upon reflection I’m disappointed at the manner we that we conceded twice today, but weren’t clinical enough in the attacking half today to really suggest we should have taken all three points. Not the end of the world, we will regroup, train hard, plan for our next opponents and keep on the path we have set for ourselves for this season and beyond.
Player of the Day: Toss up between both fullbacks (Maia and Alex). Both responded well after half time and got themselves in possession high up the pitch in which we could solidify our attack.
The team: Lily Alfield, Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Nicole Merrin, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Stef White, Hannah Wong, Ashleigh Ward, Monique Barker, Marcella Wood. Subs: Isla Smith, Ariana Te Momo, Alice Foote, Emma Proctor, Melanie Cameron.
Next weekend we play are back home against Avon at the earlier kickoff time of 12pm.

2 May 2009: Halswell 0 Coastal Spirit 1
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
Again... what a difference a week makes. Today, those who came out to support the group - away to table topping Halswell - were treated to a first half display of attractive, attacking football, coupled with collective defensive understanding and desire. These were all areas we worked on throughout the week, and just proves that even with a completely different group than previous seasons, the girls are capable of not only winning crucial games but playing football to do it.
With the few changes to the line up (Maia moving to fullback and Ashleigh starting) today, we started with a very dynamic looking attacking crew and an experienced (in senior games not in age) defensive block. The plan was to attack with real speed, fluidity and movement and defend collectively and with real hunger to win the ball back. Both groups preformed very well on the first spell. Monique's goal (3rd of the season) came right from the training pitch: the ball turned over centrally (Sally), played out to the upcoming fullback (Maia) who continued her run into the attacking third. A diagonal run (Monique) and interchange from the attacking four (Ashleigh, Hannah and Marcella) with an entry ball from Maia, saw Monique into space inside the box. A well taken finish and we were 1-0 up. Strong performances from our central midfield pairing (Sally and Stef) winning a lot of first and second phase ball, movement and trickery from Hannah and Del and Nicole (centre backs) dealing with any real threat Halswell could throw at us saw us going in at the break with a comfortable 1-0 lead and the girls with a smile on their faces.
Needless to say, Halswell would come out strong at us after the break. But again we played some attractive football at times and continued to create chances, only to be denied by the post and some good goalkeeping. I believed that a second goal would have killed the game off today. However, that wasn't to be the case, and for the final 20 minutes were pushed a little deeper than I would have liked. Not an issue though, as unlike last week we defended well, and Lily dealt with any potential danger well. I was able to give a senior debut to Melanie Cameron for the final 10 minutes, which now means we given valuable match experience to 5 of our youth girls this season.
I thank everyone for coming down to support the girls today, and hope that you can look at my pledge from last week (that you won't witness this team defend that poorly again, you will see some magic from Lily in nets, and a more productive coach on the sidelines) and can say "yes, that's what I say today".
Player of the Day: Stef White. Battled in the middle of the pitch and dominated the aerial battle. A performance of an experienced senior player.
The team: Lily Alfield, Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Nicole Merrin, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Stef White, Hannah Wong, Ashleigh Ward, Monique Barker, Marcella Wood. Subs: Isla Smith, Ariana Te Momo, Alice Foote, Emma Proctor, Melanie Cameron.
Next weekend we play a top of the table clash away to Western (Walter Park). Should be a classic so get down and support the troops at 12.30pm.

25 April 2009: Coastal Spirit 3 FM Bays 4
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
What a difference a week makes. From winning a national title (the highlight of my coaching career) and playing some good football along the way, to losing at home in the WPL and conceding 4 goals to boot. I believe we were suffering from hangover-like symptoms (myself included) from last week's football excursion. However, I can sit here and make excuses, but we only have ourselves to blame and the solutions will come from within. As when things don't go so well in football, the group must pull together to make themselves stronger - which we will do this week.
For those who have seen us play for the last 2 months, you will know we are a very solid defensive unit, and until last week hadn't conceded a goal for over 9 hours. As a group we will not be able to defend that poorly again if we tried. A first senior game for our new keeper Lily, will undoubtedly take valuable lesions from the game, and will go from strength to strength. After not conceding a goal the entire tournament in Napier, Lily will feel she could have done better on a few of the goals we conceded, however the ball still needs to get past 10 others before finding her.
Poor individual errors, coupled with easy give-aways of possession, continually plagued our display. The introduction of Ashleigh and Ari after 35 minutes sent a statement to the group that, with competition for places high, I am not afraid of dragging players for under-performing. The shock had an immediate affect with Monique pulling a goal back and with Ashleigh and Hannah going very close before the break. At 1-2 down at halftime, I still felt confident the game was well within reach. We came out strong and, as with previous games, missed chances would again cost us. We soon found ourselves 1-4 down, so replacing a defender with a striker (Mollie Cairns), and an almost do or die approach, goals to Marcella Wood and Hannah Wong we got the score line a little more respectful, but in reflection didn't deserve to take anything from the game.
I thank everyone for coming down to support the girls today, and make a pledge that you won't witness this team defend that poorly again, you will see some magic from Lily in nets, and a more productive coach on the sidelines.
Player of the Day: Monique Barker. Always caused problems with her pace and attacking flair. Took her goal well. The team: Lily Alfield, Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Isla Smith, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Stef White, Hannah Wong, Alice Foote, Monique Barker, Marcella Wood. Subs: Chloe Jones, Ariana Te Momo, Ashleigh Ward, Mollie Cairns.

13 April 2009: Coastal Spirit 1 Halswell 1
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
Our second game of the weekend brought previously undefeated Halswell to our part of town. Although we had played less than 48 hours ago, I felt we had sufficiently rested enough key players to be ready for today's big clash. With Hannah Wong failing a pre-match fitness test, Mollie Cairns was brought into the squad.
For the first time this year, we now not only have a full squad but also numerous players fighting for places. I feel with the emergence of Ashleigh on Saturday, Ariana playing a strong 90 minutes and contributing a goal, Maia Vink nearing full fitness, Isla Smith having started every game up until now and holding her own, competition for places will hopefully bring out the best in the girls.
Again we started very brightly, and again we failed to convert good goal-scoring chances, which ultimately cost us today. After the strong start, the determination and desire of the opposition to prove a point that they want to be title contenders, coupled with our girls' tiring legs, meant Halswell finished the half the stronger. Needless to say a few stern words, matched with Ariana and Isla replacing Emma and Nicole respectively, brought about a far more committed second spell. However, it really took the introduction of the energetic Ashleigh, followed by us going a goal down (80th minute), for us to realise that 3 points wouldn't be a given. After going a goal down (first time since pre season match #1 and first goal conceded in more than 9 hours of football), the entire squad lifted and immediately hit back with a determined finish from Ashleigh (3rd for the weekend). More great chances were to follow (free header to Ariana and shot well saved from Sally) before the final whistle, but as with the story of the weekend (and season to date), we cannot complain if we fail to convert great opportunities into goals!
Player of the Day: Maia Vink (pictured). First full 90 minutes of football for a long time. Always calm and strong on the ball. A genuine leader of the team, and nearing full fitness.
The team: Megan Shea, Maia Vink, Adelma Matthews, Nicole Merrin, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Stef White, Emma Proctor, Alice Foote, Monique Barker, Marcella Wood. Subs: Isla Smith, Ariana Te Momo, Ashleigh Ward, Mollie Cairns, Lily Afield.
Next weekend is the bye, which is perfectly timed as we have Lily, Laura (14's), Ashleigh, Isla, Mollie, Chloe (15's), Hannah, Nicole (16's) and myself (15's) away in Napier all week with National Federation tournament. I wish all the girls the best of luck for the event. Next game is at home to Ferrymead Bays on the 25th April.

11 April 2009: Avon 0 Coastal Spirit 4
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
Today saw us take on a completely unknown Avon team at Avonhead Park. We have not seen Avon (unlike the other teams in the league), throughout the preseason tournament. With plenty of new faces, including a familiar one of Gabby Kerdemelidis who played for CSFC last year, we approached the Avon with respect but were keen to stamp our authority early. This we certainly did, however without much to show for it on the scoreboard.
With pace and movement from our front 4, we were able to get behind the Avon defence, however failed to beat the keeper - either from close range or from distance. An early injury to Hannah Wong meant a brief shuffle around, with Monique Barker coming on as a right winger. It was her who made the telling breakthrough just before halftime.
Directions at the half were to retain possession, make the correct decisions in possession and not to settle for hopeful, long-range efforts. I feel the girls really took this advice to heart and applied themselves a whole lot more efficiently. The introduction of Sally Chetwin into the middle of the park allowed us to control the tempo a lot more, which in turn allowed for some attractive football at times. Then came the Ashleigh Ward show. A decisive break down the left, a strong run into the box and a powerful, low shot brought her first senior goal. An Ariana Te Momo goal, followed by a second to Ashleigh, completed the scoring. But on another day it could have been a whole lot more.
4-0 final score. Pleased to get three points, but a little disappointed with the fact we didn’t convert our opportunities. Very pleased to see the emergence of Ashleigh as a serious senior player.
Player of the Day: Ashleigh Ward (pictured). A perfect debut senior start for the club. Always looked dangerous with her pace down the left, and chipped in with two well-taken goals.
The team: Megan Shea, Isla Smith, Adelma Matthews, Maia Vink, Alex Hepburn, Ariana Te Momo, Stef White, Emma Proctor, Hannah Wong, Ashleigh Ward, Marcella Wood. Subs: Sally Chetwin, Alice Foote, Monique Barker, Chloe Jones, Lily Afield.

4 April 2009: Coastal Spirit 0 Western 0
by Gareth Turnbull, Women's First Team Coach
Any games played at English Park under lights will always be a big occasion. Add in the fact it was the first game of the season, and that we were playing arch-rivals Western, this game had all the makings of a classic. The girls didn't disappoint, but the score line did not come to the party.
The key for us today was our attitude and desire to collect three points. It was very pleasing to see that the girls took these words to heart and turned in a fully committed performance against a very good and experienced Western side.
With Sally Chetwin and Stef White dominating in the middle of the park and our back four limiting the opposition to efforts from outside the box, we were able to use the pace of Monique Barker (club debut) and Emma Proctor in the attempt to get in behind the Western defence throughout the first half. With the share of possession and efforts on goal, I feel we were unlucky not to take the half time lead. Missed opportunities would later impact on the final result.
A much more determined Western side look a lot more dangerous with pace and skilful attacking in the second spell. However, resolute defending from our back four, as well as 3 class saves from Megan Shea kept Western scoreless. We were able to introduce Maia Vink back into the team, after damaging her ankle in the first pre-season game 6 weeks ago. Substitute appearances for Laura Merrin (senior debut) and Mollie Cairns, as well as the first senior start for Isla Smith along with Hannah Wong and Nicole Merrin meant that we had 5 players backing up from a full day of Federation training camp. My hats go off to all these girls for their efforts.
0-0 final score. A draw a fair reflection. I feel the league is going to be a very tight one this year, with no real easy beats on the cards, and no clear run away favourite. It's going to be a cracker of a year!!!!
Woman of the Match: Nicole Merrin. A wonderful debut for the club. Made several covering tackles and dominated the aerial battle. Played 90 minutes despite having a suspected broken arm (more to follow).
The team: Megan Shea, Isla Smith, Adelma Matthews, Nicole Merrin, Alex Hepburn, Sally Chetwin, Stef White, Emma Proctor, Hannah Wong, Monique Barker, Marcella Wood. Subs: Maia Vink, Ariana Te Momo, Laura Merrin, Mollie Cairns, Lily Afield.
Next weekend is the double header, with an away game to unknown Avon at Avonhead Park on Saturday, and then we host Halswell on Monday. 6 points are a must as we look to head into our bye weekend undefeated and on top of the table.

14 September 2008: Coastal Spirit 7 Avon United 0
Reta Fitzpatrick Cup Final
The final performance of the season matched the brilliant weather and clear blue skies of a perfect Christchurch day. With the thought of Reta looking over us and a promise I'd made her at her funeral, the plan was to bring that Little Blue Cup home.
The past 3 weeks has seen the guys play some great football and wrap up the WPL and in an outstanding display of skill, and composed football we added the Reta to deservedly give us the double for 2008.
At English Park in excellent conditions the objective was to move the ball around and use our skill and pace to exert pressure from the first whistle. For large parts of the game we played some of our best football of the season with terrific passing, movement and skill. We had struggled with some of the heavy sodden grounds earlier in the season not suiting our style, today the ball rolled true and we played.
In the first 45 minutes of almost total control we played Avon off the park and we were rewarded with a 2-0 lead with goals from Alana and Megan. On the run of play and opportunities created we could have (and probably should have) been in front by more. The movement and passing displayed was quality.
Emma Proctor in a non-stop ball of energy display caused all sorts of problems for Avon. Time after time she created opportunities on the right, delivering quality balls into the box or into the feet of our strikers. Emma's performance reflected all the hard work and enthusiasm she has put into the team this season both in games and on the training pitch. Emma's genuine hard work and enthusiasm is unmatched and it was very pleasing to see her performing so well in a cup final. In our efforts to exhaust Avon in the first 45, so many players lifted their intensity and were difficult to contain. A torrid first 20 set the scene for the game.
The second half call was to keep the pressure on and continue to move the Avon side around. This was followed to the letter and a further 5 goals were scored. Hannah Wong picked up a 2nd half hat trick with Emma Proctor and Poppy Binning also finding the back of the net.
Our 5th clean sheet in a row, which is something that Noran, and "Team D" can be very proud of. Noran in goal again kept her concentration throughout and was called on to make a telling save midway through the 2nd half that kept the opposition scoreless. Noran has conceded only 6 goals all season, which is a fantastic record, she has stood tall and clearly the best Keeper in our region.
Our defenders of Kirsty Palmer, Adelma Matthews, Maia Vink and Alex Hepburn are unmatched in one on one defending. They just don't get beaten, not feeling sorry for the opposition but, they certainly made life tough for the young forwards. Again their communication, understanding and positioning was outstanding and the foundations of good performances are set with their consistently good efforts every game. Kirsty rolled her ankle in a soft patch of ground in the first half and to her credit, stood strong until Isla Smith stepped in to cover. Isla was already on cloud 9 having cleaned up at the Junior Prize giving the night before being named Defender of the year overall along with Player of the Year and most promising. She has shown a maturity that will enable her to make the most of her Premier experience this season. Isla continued to set the high standard at left back and launched a few attacks with composed balls forward to feet and looked like a pro.
One huge disappointment for me (and it's my opinion) 2 of the best performed defenders in the region this season were not considered for nomination for Mainland Defender of the year. Adelma and Alex have clearly stood out and although it is nice for our young Maia to rightfully receive a nomination (and Megan who played a couple of games at left back) it is also frustrating to find out the process used to select these players. That's another story for another day.
Midfield of Stef White, Alana Ainsworth and Poppy Binning were creative in possession and applied pressure to squeeze Avon out of possession. Alana got through a ton of work and displayed tremendous skill and flair with the ball. Knowing Avon's game well and deciding on a lop-sided 4-3-3. We pushed Megan inside with Wongie and opened up the wide left for Alana to exploit. Stef and Poppy were called on to work the middle of the park out-numbered at times until our fullbacks pushed on and they were superb. All dominated their opponents and they were the catalyst for a good deal of our attacking options. Young Ashleigh Ward came on and excited the crowd with her pace, great delivery into the box that resulted in 2 of the goals and a couple of good chances for her to get on the score sheet. Remember that name; she's one for the future.
Up front Hannah Wong, Megan, Emma were always busy looking for openings and responsible for giving the Avon defence a torrid afternoon. Chances created through good work was thwarted by some safe hands from the Avon keeper and hurried shots at goal, we were thrilled however by their performance. Megan had completed some fitness work the day before with U-17's so made way for fresh legs in Alice Foote. Alice has consistently worked hard this season, she's a handful on the left and her determination creates havoc at times for the opposition.
MVP was named at the presentation to Hannah Wong for her 3 goals, she again proved she is a talented goal scorer worth her weight in gold.
Georgia Goulding (took advantage of an opening to have her operation on her ankle) and Gabby Kerdemelidis (school leadership camp) were unavailable but both have played significant contributions leading up to the final. Others to mention as key contributors are Olivia Meares and Liz Gilchrist.
So the Reta goes with the league title to give us the double which is something we had put down as a goal right back in January when we first assembled. That's 3 seasons coaching in the Premier League and 3 Doubles...that's not bad.
As an amalgamated club it has been great to see the tradition that New Brighton have in this competition be transferred over to Coastal Spirit. Especially special is the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup who we played for and who did so much for women's football with Rangers and Canterbury. To have Ric in attendance and present the trophy was also very special.
The players in the initial couple of months worked very hard at fitness and that work and effort has been rewarded with some fantastic performances especially over the business end of the season. The season has been difficult with some bad weather that has impacted on games and trainings. We continued to train twice a week, which is something that a number of women's teams don't do, but it has held us in good stead especially when the crucial games came around.
We've had to fight a number of off field battles, which has seen us strongly disagreeing with the outcomes. While these things are draining and disappointing given most of our issues were more than fair and reasonable, it is highly satisfying that while we have lost some battles we have won the war and proved that on the park week in week out we were the best and most consistent team in this region.
Thank you
- To Gareth and the club for their ongoing support during the season.
- To Jim and Lee Hawkey big thanks for their input and support.
- To Phil and Ben for giving us a voice and a face on the website.
- To the under-16 players who helped us out during the season and who hopefully got some game time in WPL that will assist their development. Isla Smith and Ashleigh Ward have played the most often from this group and their performances and efforts have been terrific and they have more than held their own at WPL level.
- To all the people who took time to come along and watch we have really appreciated the time and effort you made to do so.
- To young Rachel O'Keefe who was always at our trainings and games. It is important that young players have role models to look up to. Hopefully Rachel being around senior players who made her welcome will spur her own to continue to work hard and strive to be the best she can, the future is in the hands of our young players.
On a sad note we farewell Kirsty Palmer who is moving to Australia, Alana Ainsworth who will be in the Dunedin university environment in 2009 and Noran Abaza who has plans to move to Auckland in the New Year to play.
We will miss these players not only for their outstanding football ability and contributions they made in 08, but also for their personalities, the sense of fun they bring to the team and the genuinely nice people that they are.
We said back in January when players were running their arses off "it's all money in the bank" and if 2008 proves anything it is that you get what you deserve if you work hard at it. A bunch of really nice people did work hard and got exactly what they deserved.

Coastal Spirit: League Champions
They say in football you get what you deserve. From January we have been fortunate to have a group of players who have been prepared to put in the time and effort to train and play hard week in and week out. Their reward was confirmed on Saturday by securing an inaugural WPL championship by 5 points (make that 8 points barring a 3-point penalty from game one that we still believe unjust) over their nearest rivals for the club in a league season that has seen as many battles off the park as on. Consistency, class, effort and endeavour have characterised the performances throughout the season.
We went into Saturday's game with Ferrymead Bays knowing a point (or a 21-nil loss) would secure the title. We spoke before the game of wanting to keep up the standards and intensity and finish off in style. A 4-0 victory against 3rd placed Ferrymead ensured an unbeaten away record in the league. While it may not have been the most stylish performance, confirmation of the title was sweet. Again, another clean sheet (our 4th in a row) laid the foundation and allowed us to exert pressure, create opportunities and in general stay in control of our own destiny.
Three first half goals to Megan Shea, Stef White and Maia Vink confirmed that the title would be ours. A goal to Kirsty Palmer midway through the 2nd half rounded off the win, which could have been greater as we created opportunities and were denied by the woodwork twice.
Noran in goal dealt confidently with all her work and her reward was another clean sheet. The backline of Alex, Adelma, Maia, Kirsty and Isla were strong and organised - all displayed excellent composure and skill especially in one-on-one defending. We were determined to rotate our players and give as many as much game time as possible. We had 6 players returning from the week-long Secondary School tournament, so the emphasis was on trying to manage them whilst ensuring we performed to a consistent standard. In midfield Stef, Alana, Georgia, Poppy and Gabby all worked hard, and - as in the majority of games this season - got on top of the opposition and made opportunities for us to create pressure on the opposition.
Up front Emma, Alice, Megan and Ashleigh all caused Ferrymead problems. We had the luxury of not needing our top goal-scorer Hannah Wong for more than 15mins. The intention was to give Wongie a run, see how her legs held up and have a look at the golden boot tally but, that wasn't to be. Wongie will benefit from the reduced workload in preparation for this week's cup final.
It was a pleasure to receive the Trophy from Mainland and even nicer to personally hand it to Grant Chellew. First senior trophy for the cupboard for Coastal Spirit and something to celebrate for everyone, including our fantastic supporters. Thanks for the wine Grant, it was a challenge trying to keep the young mouths closed when the corks popped, the oldies enjoyed the bubbles.
So, trophy one locked away and Avon awaits us Sunday in the Reta final. For the players to have the opportunity to win the double is exciting. To complete it will be great for them and sets a benchmark for future seasons. Sunday looms as a big day out for the club. Good luck to Alan his team in their build up. We hope between us we can make the day a memorable one.
A final wrap up of the league season:
- We scored the most goals.
- We conceded the least.
- We were undefeated away from home and only conceded 1 goal away.
- We had 9 clean sheets in 16 games.
GLORY…GLORY….

30 August 2008: Western 0 Coastal Spirit 1
Glory, Glory Coastal Spirit rang from the rooftops today and didn't we damn well work hard for it.
Role models for young players were in abundance at Cuthberts where players gave their all for their team mates, were disciplined in their roles, played some intelligent and exciting football across the park and never gave up for 90 minutes. If we were proud of the performance against a hard working Ferrymead on Tuesday, then we were delighted with the attitudes and application today. It wasn't always a pretty game to watch, both teams knew how much was riding on the result and, at times, decision making from the man in the middle caused some discussion from the large crowd that certainly got their monies worth again today.
Noran Abaza and Poppy Binning flew in from Auckland arriving at the park in time to join the team and everyone else was fit after the tough midweek game, including Adelma Matthews, carefully taped up to ensure there'd be no blood breaks if the stitches were stressed.
The game started with some frenzied play from both sides, Megan Shea and Hannah Wong's partnership up front was outstanding again today causing so many problems for their defence and creating chances to get in behind. Delivery was disappointing in the early stages of the game and knowing the wind was going to affect play we didn't take advantage of it by directing the play as we hoped.
Alana Ainsworth, Stef White, Georgia Goulding worked tirelessly in midfield against a spoiling Western, but Poppy had the job of containing Western's playmaker, Kelly. Poppy's performance, man marking her out of possession and blocking her tackling in possession affected Western's ability to play anything forward. Frustrating our opposition was the plan and after a free kick was awarded to us, the ball was angrily kicked away there was no resulting yellow - one of many instances that went unaddressed. Another incident saw a vicious and calculating tackle from behind by the same angry player on Hannah Wong that was called - again free kick given but no consequences, go figure.
It was 25 minutes into the game when we started to switch play more productively. Kirsty Palmer ran on to a good cross ball and played a great one forward for Georgia, who clipped a cheeky ball behind the defence on the angle, teasing the keeper enough to make her advance. The ever present Wongie (always a handful), raced in front of keeper and defender to volley the ball into an empty net. Exactly what we needed, reward for the possession and territory dominance.
We've been very happy with our defensive setup and again we had good shape across the back, always having cover from Alex Hepburn and Kirsty. Maia Vink and Del contained the Western attackers well trying to come through the middle. We had prepared Maia to back Del up with balls in the air, it wasn't necessary. Del's first highball was met with the same force as always, there was no way she was going to let anything bounce today. Maia Vink has really come into her own in the last few games with fantastic ball forward and always so composed. She was strong in the tackle, consistently and calmly played great ball forward, she was never beaten and had another strong game.
Our Alana, contender for Mainland midfielder of the year, proved today she indeed has been one of the most outstanding young players in our region this season. She gives so much to a game that it becomes the norm to watch her excel and an expectation that she will run for everything and never give up. Today Alana stood out, her running was deliberate, intelligent and her aerial game was absolutely essential to our dominance in midfield. Her aggressive runs forward to support Wongie and Megan gave us the edge and the work by Stef, George and Poppy set us up for our victory.
At the 75 the call went out and the guys lifted and dug in for the run home. The next 15 minutes was shared and although Noran didn't have anything to save at all, she was safe and should easily be the goalkeeper of the year based on results, the least goals conceded by a country mile and consistent performances. Nah has been safe, confident and composed behind our back 4 and her encouragement to see the game out kept the guys focused. At the 80min we prepared to run down the clock, Emma Proctor and Alice Foote were asked to do the toughest job today, keep the team focused and do a job when they went on and they did. We were thrilled with the fighting attitudes of the guys, to grind out a 1-nil win has been a season in the learning and every ball, every throw in and every tackle took us to the victory we deserved.
The delight from the large crowd when the final whistle went was deafening and well received from the guys, they deserved their win today and I don't give toss if some of the opposition wouldn't shake hands after the game.
In spite of the attitude of one or two from Western today, we still wish them well in Auckland. It'll be tough but if they do their homework, Cup Finals are all about a one-off game and the Coach's ability to have a game plan and get the best from their players. Hopefully they'll get some supporters to head up with them to boost their challenge.
Our boys were playing down the road and it was important to get down and shout for them just as they had done for us on the Tuesday night in our Cup semi. They had a similar battle and we arrived at half time to find they too had secured the lead through a Gareth Turnbull goal. It was a physical game and watching them fight for their win and show the determination and Spirit, we felt quite happy with the day.
Player of the day: Alana Ainsworth. Her work ethic and never-give-up attitude will take her a long way in life. You will achieve if you work hard and just when you think you can't do anymore, Alana will show you that you can.
Next Saturday to finish off the league is against Ferrymead, at this stage at Ferrymead. We're asking the guys to finish the job and keep the momentum going for Avon in the Reta and we can look forward to a big day out for the club on the 14th September. If we don't see you next week, we'll see you on Finals' day.
26 August 2008: Reta Fitzpatrick Cup SF: Coastal Spirit 5 FM Bays 0
Finally, after the third attempt we got the game played and achieved the result we wanted. Given the amount of rain we've had and the constant training sessions on the pitch, it [Eric Adam Park / Rangers Park] was surprisingly free of surface water although it was very heavy underfoot. Thank you to Gareth and the club for the work they have put into ole girl to get it up to the condition it was in. It was fitting to play one of the last games there for Reta and she was our motivation.
Two quick goals within the first 5 minutes from Georgia Goulding and Hannah Wong set the tone and platform for a very pleasing and hard worked victory. Again we looked solid at the back, always perfect positioning and, while Ferrymead had some mobile frontrunners, for the greater part we coped extremely well.
Olivia Meares filled in admirably for Noran in goal. Her presence and distribution was good and we are appreciative that Olivia is available to assist us as and when required.
Alex Hepburn, Adelma Matthews, Kirsty Palmer and Maia Vink provided the backbone and all were strong and composed. Their consistent performances each and every game gives confidence to the rest of the team. Midway through the first half Del suffered a head wound but some quick patch-up work, gluing it together, allowed her to continue and she never flinched her responsibilities for the 60 minutes she played bandaged up. Her attitude and commitment really rubs off through the team.
Through our midfield we wanted to move the ball around and create pressure in the attacking areas which were the least cut up. We achieved this for the most part, which was great as it was very difficult to be creative in the conditions. Alana Ainsworth ran tirelessly all night and did a lot of work in pressurising Ferrymead's ball and Gabby Kerdemelidis stood up to her more experienced marker taking both the physical and verbal challenge in her stride. Emma Proctor and Georgia Goulding were at the heart of a lot of our moves and were effective both in and out of possession.
Megan Shea, back from Auckland, scored towards the end of the first half with a great left foot shot to take us in 3-0 up at the half and looks good from the additional work she's getting through with her NZ U-17 team mates. Being the target man has certainly lifted her confidence going forward and she was difficult for the Ferrymead defence to contain.
The second half started well with Megan adding her second within the first 10 minutes, which was what we asked for at half time. Megan and Hannah Wong up front put pressure on Ferrymead throughout and their contrasting styles and strengths complemented each other. A good ball forward for Hannah to jink into the box earned a penalty that Megan put away for her hat-trick.
The introduction of Alice Foote added some additional pace and, like last Saturday, Alice really battled and pressurised the opposition - creating opportunities for us to get into more scoring positions.
Again, two young players in Isla Smith and Ashleigh Ward saw premier Women's football action. They continue to fit in well and, hopefully, the experiences will assist their development. I love their enthusiasm, they're fantastic.
Ferrymead contributed to the game with their never-give-up attitude and have players who test our defence. Last night we passed that test again with flying colours.
Thank you to Lee and Jim Hawkey who gave up their time to ensure the changing rooms were clean, the guys appreciate your support every week and so do Mike, Heather and I. Last night was important to all of us.
With Reta Fitzpatrick having such huge influence within the Rangers club we are excited about the opportunity to play in the Final in her memory and attempt to get the Coastal Spirit name on the trophy in the first year of amalgamation between Rangers and New Brighton. For us it'll be the third time - so everything to play for. It was fitting that the semi-final win was manufactured on the ground that Reta would have called her second home. We'll make sure the finals day will be memorable - especially if Alan and the boys can do the business on Saturday.
Before the Reta Final there are two important league games to play. This Saturday v Western, who will buoyed by their great achievement of making the National Knock-Out Cup Final. Hopefully the game can live up to its potential and showcase the best of women's football in our region. 12.30pm at Walter Park No.1 Cuthberts. Let's hope the weather and pitch conditions allow for a good contest.
Player of the Day - for the second game running - Adelma Matthews
Del went immediately to A&E to have the 'dressing' cut from her head. As expected from the effort to glue the gash together it needed 4 stitches. She did ask for 5 though, 1 for each goal. Del will be 110% ready for Saturday!
