2008 Season Review
This was to be my third year of coaching the Rovers A team. After completing the double in the previous 2 years, we were looking at possibly completing a treble of league and cup success.
Training commenced early February with the league to commence the first week past Easter.
We had the return of most of the previous year's squad and also some new faces that came to preseason. As with all teams that I have coached, the team squad would not be chosen until a couple of weeks prior to the season starting.
During the first couple of training sessions, we lost Graham Cox to a severe knee injury. We lost another new player, Andy, to a broken ankle. Tony Green decided it was time to retire from Sunday Football to advance his junior coaching credentials and we gained a couple of players from the home land, Mikey Campbell and Steve Potter. Stu had again taken the 'B' team and he also had a few new faces attending.
A difficult decision had to be made as the captaincy was vacant due to Tony's retirement. This left a huge gap and it took some time to decide on a replacement. After careful deliberations, Andy Anderson accepted the role as team captain for this year.
We had a couple of practice games and this led into our first game of the year against our old foe, Glenbyre at Bexley Reserve. A cautious start to the season with a 3-all draw. This was followed by a game against Dux. We turned this into a 2-1 victory and enjoyed reversing the result for last year at their ground.
The third game was against Prebbleton and had an easy 4-nil victory. It was at this time that due to a change at work, I could not commit to continuing as Coach for Rovers. Graham Cox stepped up and took over. Jeremy and Chris Friend transferred to the Rovers team to put the squad back to 15 players.
The 4th game of the year was to be a sour note on the season as Azzurri took the game 6-3. Enough has already been said about this game. We now had a week off due to Bolam Cup games and the next game was to be against the Rovers B team at Bexley.
The game came and went. The 'A's won 3-2 however the cost was loosing Craig Gault to a bad knee injury. The following week we completed round 1 with a good 7-3 victory against Japan.
Half way through the season, although only 6 games played, and we were top equal on points and second on goal difference. Timing at work had again changed that allowed myself to assist Graham with the team as we wanted to take them back to the top.
This was followed by our first game in the Bolam Cup against Sino Utd. This was an uneven game as we won 10-2 and put us through to the ¼ finals.
The next 2 weeks would be tough as games against Glenbyre and Dux were always fought to the end. We played Glenbyre at their new home ground and dominated the game to win 3-nil. Top of the league and ready to take on Dux the following week. We played Dux at Bexley and in a game of 2 halves, we were outplayed in the first half, however completely dominated the second and won the game 4-1. This may have been the season turning point as we started to play some brilliant football.
We now had our ¼ final game for the Bolam Cup. As per the game report, this is probably the best game we played this year without scoring the vital goal This allowed the opposition to sneak 1 goal and put us out… enough said.
We now had the league to play for and are top of the table. With games against the lower half of the league to play, it was in our hands to complete a 4th league title in a row.
The next 3 weeks we accounted for Prebbleton (5-0), Azzurri (7-1) and Avonhead (6-0). Other results went our way and with 3 games left we are 7 points clear at the top of the table. The next game was against the 'B's and a win would secure the title again.
A good day at Bexley with the 'C's game cancelled as their opposition defaulted. The Saturday PDL team had an early kick-off for a catch up game and this made for a full deck to watch the game.
The team played some quality football and completed the league title in winning the game 4-1. Celebrations had all round.
League Title completed with 2 games to go…
With the weather causing major disruptions and cancellations, we played our last game against Japan. This was a "let's have some fun" game and positioned decided by names out of a hat. No game plan, no instructions apart from go out and enjoy themselves. This they did by convincingly winning 7-0.
Another good year by the team, winning the league title for the 4th time in 4 years. It was disappointing that we were unable to complete the Treble Double of League and Cup, however that is what knock-out competitions are for.
Thanks goes to the loyal band of supporters who watched our games this year. Their vocals were greatly appreciated again this year and I know the team appreciated your attendance.
A special thanks to Graham Cox who took over the coaching duties when my work schedule would not allow coaching time. His continual drive to have the team succeed was invaluable.
Coastal Spirit Rovers had a good year with all teams winning silverware…

7 September 2008: DDP Japan v CS Rovers A
This was a game that most were looking forward to as we were to pick team positions out of a hat. I arranged with the Ref that both teams would be able to use rolling subs and this was agreed to by Japan.
20 minutes from kick off and we only had 11 players, hoping now that Japan also only had 11 players.
Positions for today's team were made and John Walsh decided not to move to striker until later in the game as he did not want to show up the opposition's defence.
| Player | Normally | Today's Selection |
|---|---|---|
| John Walsh | Goalkeeper | Goalkeeper/Striker |
| Brendon Foster | Right Back | Left Back |
| Ben Norris | Centre Back | Sweeper |
| Andy Anderson | Sweeper | Striker |
| Max Sykes | Left Back | Centre Midfield |
| Chris Friends | Right Midfield | Right Midfield |
| Steve Potter | Centre Midfield | Striker |
| Jamie Stewart | Left Midfield | Centre Back |
| Gary Joynson | Striker | Right Back |
| Jeremy Friend | Striker | Centre Midfield |
| Hayden Paterson | Sub | Left Midfield |
Of the 11 players, 8 were at Alex Kelly's stag function that commenced at 10am Saturday and finished sometime Sunday morning and the other 3 had functions on Saturday evening also. Drink bottles were laid out down the sideline as they would become quite useful during the game.
With the positions sorted, it was team talk time to sort out strategies. When the coaches were asked for information, the players were shown the game plan. A blank sheet of paper as this was their game and they could sort it out as the game evolved.
The game commenced and as with all games, the players were full of energy and commitment. We dominated from the start and created quite a few chances without success. The change in positions did not seem to be too disruptive. Playing into a strong wind, the players knocked the ball around and if only to convert possession into goals. This occurred midway through the first half when Andy drilled a right footed volley into the net... well actually beat the keeper to the ball to tap it past him.
Japan tried to make some attacking runs only to be foiled by Jamie Stewart as he got his foot to the ball before they could strike at goal. One chance arrived for them only to be halted by John rising like a salmon, palming the ball away and landing like a rock on the hard playing surface… great save.
Gazza was making some powerful runs from right back as he went looking to increase the goal tally. Some of the runs you would not normally see from a Right Back. Jeremy was also looking to strike at any time with some well struck power shots only to lack direction.
In the remaining part of the first half, Gazza managed to sneak into the 18 yard box to steal a goal and Jeremy also added to the tally.
Half time and 3-nil lead. John in goal still not wanting to show up the opposition defence and remained in goal for the time being. Some water consumption taken and calls from the coaching staff to enjoy this game the lads returned to combat.
The night before appeared to be taking some sting out of the players however with 45 minutes to go, they rallied around to start the second half with the blazing wind at the backs.
Again Japan tried to make the play only to be deprived of any goal scoring opportunities by the defence.
John Walsh moved to striker with 18 minutes left. He was right not to do this for the whole game as the Japanese defenders would have had lots of trouble. John showed some great touches only to be foiled by the roll of the ball.
We played the majority of the game in their half and then started to complete some goal scoring opportunities.
- Brendon chipped the keeper from 35 yards.
- Steve slotted a tap in.
- Max headed in from a Jamie Stewart long throw.
- Chris swerved a corner directly into the goal.
This may well be the last game for the team this year, we still have one left however the opposition for that game defaulted today and if we do get the play the last one, they may well do this again.
Well done to the team for accepting the positions selected for and making the game enjoyable for the supporters to watch.
All the best to the following teams on their cup finals next Sunday.
- English Cup - Saturday Men's First Team - 2pm KO at English Park
- Reta Fitzpatrick Cup - Ladies First team - 11am KO at English Park
- CSSL Trophy - Sunday CS Rovers B team - 11am KO at Bexley Reserve.
Let's get out there and support the teams. Looking forward to seeing you all back at Bexley on Sunday to celebrate.

31 August 2008: CS Rovers A 4 CS Rovers B 1
Coastal Spirit Rovers A 2008 CHAMPIONS CSSL Div 1
Last week's victory led to the possibility of cementing the title for 2008 with 2 games to go. This was done by completing a 4-1 victory against the Rovers B team, who themselves have had a good first year in CSSL Div 1.
This year we have had a squad of 15 players and also the assistance from John McManus and Ben McNabb.
This year's squad was:
- John Walsh
- Brendon Foster
- Andy Anderson (Capt)
- Ben Norris
- Max Sykes
- Alex Kelly
- Chris Friend
- Craig Gault
- Mark Williams
- Steve Potter
- Jamie Stewart
- Alex Moss
- Gary Joynson
- Hayden Paterson
- Jeremy Friend
Today's game started well with a well-directed cross from Jamie Stewart to find the top corner of the goal after 1 min 19 seconds into the game.
Great start, however we were not able to complete various great attacking plays and this started us attempting too hard and not controlling the play. The B team also created a few chances and never stopped trying and were rewarded when we were caught in defence and put the ball past John Walsh to level at 1-all.
Half-time and it was time to reassess what we are doing. We knew what was required and had to be patient and continue to allow the ball to flow. Stop trying for glory balls and continue possession.
11 minutes into the second half and a drive into the box was deflected into the goal by Mark Williams.
32 minutes and Gary Joynson slotted away another to give a nice cushion and the title was part way to remaining at Bexley.
36 minutes and Jeremy Friend completed our goal-scoring by finishing a great cross.
Congratulations to the players for their commitment to the game this year. To complete a league title with 2 games remaining is brilliant.
Played 12, Won 10, Draw 1, Lost 1, For 51, Against 18, Points 31.
It was great to see the Deck at Bexley full again on what was a good day for the Sunday section of Coastal Spirit. We hope you all enjoyed the game and thank you for the support given to both teams.
We now look forward to the last part of the season especially with Sunday 14th September with 3 Coastal Spirit teams in the respective knock out finals:
- English Cup - Coastal Spirit v Nomads at English Park 2pm KO
- Reta Fitzpatrick Cup - Coastal Spirit Ladies v Avon at English Park 11am KO
- CSSL Trophy KO - Coastal Spirit Rovers B v Prebbleton - Venue to be confirmed.

24 August 2008: CS Rovers 7 Azzurri 1
Today we completed out 13th game for 2008, 11 league and 2 cup games. After last week's result we had set ourselves up for a great finish to the season as we had 4 games to complete the league and were 7 points ahead of our nearest challenger.
Today's opponent was Azzurri and we owed them a good game, because in round one we played poorly and conceded the game 6-3. This was a result that we all wanted to turn around with another good performance.
We started well and set the tune for the whole game. We dictated play and controlled the flow of the game. We did not let them into the game and this pressure took hold after 13 minutes when we scored our first goal. We continued to play good football and created numerous chances. During the rest of the half we scored 2 more goals to go into half time 3-0.
The team were ready to continue the battle and continue to take the game to Azzurri. This they did and dominated most of the second half. Azzurri gained a corner and we had trouble getting the ball away and it was flicked into our goal. Damn.
We came back and scored some quality goals (and some interesting ones) as their goalkeeper was at times brilliant and then very sub-standard.
End result a 7-1 victory that now leaves us still 7 points clear and the possibility of cementing the title next week when the Coastal Spirit teams play each other.
Thanks again to the supporters as this is always appreciated by the Team and I hope that we have kept you entertained.
Goalscorers:
Steve Potter x 3, Gary Joynson x 2, Mark Williams and Craig Gault.
A good day all round for Coastal Spirit Sunday Men's Team as the all teams had victories:
- CS Rovers B - 6-0 win over Avonhead
- CS Rovers C - 7-3 win over Dux de Lux

17 August 2008: Prebbleton v CS Rovers A
We started our season again after 4 weeks of weather-interrupted weekends causing postponements all over Christchurch.
We travelled to Lincoln to take on a team that has been competitive as we have no idea what team they will have due to varsity commitments etc.
We had all our team available and started with:
John Walsh, Alex Kelly, Andy Anderson, Ben Norris, Max Sykes, Chris Friend, Mark Williams, Steve Potter, Jamie Stewart, Gary Joynson and Jeremy Friend; with subs Brendon Foster, Craig Gault, Hayden Paterson and Alex Moss.
Prior to the weather interruptions, we were playing some good football and were on a good roll of victories and today we needed to start again and be patient. We needed to get control, start with some discipline and hold onto the ball to dictate play.
We started okay and created a couple of chances without securing that vital first goal. Prebbleton looked at counter attacks and were halted in scoring any goals by some brilliant 1-on-1 saves by John in goal. After 43 minutes we had that first goal when Gazza put the ball into the net from a long throw-in by Jamie.
1-nil at half time and the look in the players' eyes showed me that they were back and ready to take the game to Prebbleton.
This they did and for the next 45 minutes we dominated play with Prebbleton looking to break quickly. This was nullified by the defence with John having almost nothing to do in this half.
During this time we scored another 4 and could (should) have had 7 or 8 put away.
We are now 7 points clear at the top to CSSL Div 1 and the Bs are sitting in 3rd position. Goals today by Gary Joynson x 2 and Jeremy Friend x 3.
Well done to the players as we restart our season and to the supporters who also travelled to Lincoln, as always many thanks for this as it is always welcomed by the team and myself.
As Alan has written in his match report, "The men's 1st team and ladies 1st team have certainly been afforded great support from the club this season and we still have three trophies to play for, as well as the men's reserves still in with a shout in the league."
Well the Coastal Spirit Sunday teams still have silverware to play for also:
- The 1st team is top of their league by 7 points with 4 games to play.
- The 2nd team in their knock out final set for September 14th at QEII.
- The 3rd team can finish top of their league.
We are looking forward to celebrating these victories as the season closes upon us.

22 June 2008: CS Rovers 4 Dux de Lux 1
Today we had a chance to move 3 points clear at the top of the CSSL Division 1 table. History shows that games between these 2 teams are hard fought with varying degrees of success.
I have said before that it is not just the 11 who start each game that will give you a chance to win a league; it is about the whole squad and the strengths that lie within it that counts.
Today Craig Gault returned from injury and Jamie Stewart made his Sunday League debut.
The game… the first half was as bad as we have played all year. No teamwork, minds looked to be on other things, 45 minutes that you would rather forget. However, sometimes you need this sort of half to realise that it will not be plain sailing through the league. Dux took the game to us and we did not respond well. They dominated possession and looked to create quite a few chances. From these they scored 1 goal. They could have had at least 3 by half time. However, it was only 1-nil.
The players knew it was bad and a few words were passed on to try to turn this around. The team responded as the 2nd half started and we straight away dominated the play. It was as though Dux had just stopped. A few minutes into the second half, Gazza scored his first goal, 1-all. Another few minutes later and Jeremy scored, 2-1. All looking good with Dux hardly getting out of their half and looking for quick breaks.
Dux tried to attack and the defence handled this well and, with John in goal making a couple of good saves, they did not look like getting that 2nd goal.
Another run by Gazza: went around players to beat a defender to the ball to drive it into the goal, 3-1 up.
The team was well in control and unlucky not to take opportunities given. However the game was sealed when Steve drove a ball over the keeper and into the net to make it 4-1.
A good day by the Team and a well deserved victory. We are now 3 points ahead at the top of the table. However, we need to address each game from now to make sure there are no slips along the way.
As with each week, thanks to the supporters for their great vocals and we look forward to next week against Prebbleton and Lincoln College.

15 June 2008: Glenbyre v CS Rovers
This game would either allow the team to progress up the table to top slot or drop 3 points behind Glenbyre. Both teams were on 13 points, prior to the game, with Glenbyre having a slight advantage on goal difference.
This is the old foe over the past few years and today will be no different as both teams want to cement top slot.
Last week the players performed very well and played some good football - considering the conditions. This week we turned up at Heathcote Domain and had a good wind travelling down the park. Discussions were going on about: do we take the wind; do we go into it. However, as the game was about to start, it dropped right off.
Pressure was today's word and this is what we would need to place on Glenbyre to have a good victory. This is what we did and the players responded to the call. We put pressure on them and they had trouble getting any sort of control. We did the opposite and had control and with this put considerable pressure on their defence and goal. This paid off as (after 6 minutes) Chris slotted away the ball, from a well-played move, to put us 1-nil up.
We continued to dominate, with Glenbyre having a couple of chances from breaks. On 40 minutes, Jeremy scored another goal to put us up 2-nil and looking good. We had some defending to do for the last few minutes of the half; this was done and a deserved break taken.
A tough half just gone and I advised a tougher one to come. Not thinking that Glenbyre would "fold", I expected them to press harder to get a goal. The lads knew that we had to continue with the pressure on them to maintain and extend our lead.
The second half was another where chances came but were not taken. We needed another goal to break them down further and also make sure that they did not score against us.
It was on 78 minutes that Gazza chased a ball through, past the defence, round the keeper and slotted it away from an acute angle. 3-nil the game was ours. Subs made and the players could look forward to being on top of the league table.
Game over and 3 points to the good. We were hoping the "B" team would take points off Dux, as they did at the start of the season; however this was not to be.
We now look forward to next week at Bexley against Dux de Lux to put a gap between us and the rest of the league. This will be another very tough game as the winner will then be at the top of the league.

8 June 2008 Bolam Cup: Sino Utd v CS Rovers
The return of the old one, which is what, occurred today. Bazza back on coaching duty as Graham was unavailable.
The team had their first cup game for 2008 against a Div 3 team that has only won a single game this year. We all know what that means: do not take any team cheaply and get it over without injury or cards.
This was not a day for having a pitch ready for good quality football, as when I arrived the pitch was covered in snow turned ice.
A call to the appropriate people and we were advised the game had to go ahead. So it was transferred to the No. 1 pitch that was not as badly covered. However it was more mud than grass.
We played the game and, as with most, the first ten minutes was testing each other out. We gathered a good control and, even with the very poor conditions, played some good football that led to goals.
1 each to Jeremy, Mark, Chris and Steve.
A good lead at half time and in total control, the opposition looking at long punts -trying to fast break without success.
The players did very well, but started the second half poorly to allow pressure on ourselves that led to an own goal. 4-1 and the coach not too happy. I did not need to worry, as we again took control and in the next 4 minutes scored another 6 goals. These would be some of the best chances taken that I have seen and also some of the poorest goalkeeping around. We also conceded another one, as we were too concerned at going forward and were caught out.
Alex capped the game off with a couple, while Jeremy scored another 4 for the afternoon.
The team now play Glenbyre next week and this is a top of the table clash from which we must take maximum points. Well done to the players this week and thanks for the effort you all put in.
Many thanks also to the supporters for their vocals (and coffee) this week.

20 April 2008: CS Rovers A 4 Prebbleton 0
Another game when you are not too sure what the opposition will provide. Some insight from Stu was given during the week as they played Prebbleton last week.
With injuries from last week, we are thankful for the assistance of John McManus and Ben McNabb for this game.
The game was another step in the team working together and for 40 minutes were left frustrated as we had most of the possession without completing with a goal.
This changed on 46 minutes when a throw in went to Mikey who beat his player and passed the ball to Craig who also beat his player and slotted the ball into the net, 1 nil and deserved.
In the second half, we again dominated possession, however we still made some errors that frustrated the team.
22 minutes into the 2nd half and we scored our 2nd goal. 24 minutes and we had our third. Both scored by Steve to take his tally to 4 this year.
The 4th was scored by Mikey and that sealed the game.
This was another hard game as the team is still getting combinations together and the work done by Ben McNabb was excellent as this was his first outing this year.
John McManus had a great game in goal providing our first clean sheet for a league game.
It will be good to get the injuries fixed and for the team to continue progressing and playing some great football.
Well done again to the CS Rovers B team who head Division 1 league after their 3rd victory, against Azzurri 3-2.

13 April 2008: Dux de Lux 1 CS Rovers A 2
by Barry McTague, Sunday First Team Coach
Another Sunday and another hard game to play in the CSSL. Today we travelled to Nunweek Park for another top game for this year. This is a team that is always unknown for which team they will put out and today it was a good team that we faced.
We started well and with stood some pressure from Dux and were able to foil their attacks or they were unable to put shots on target.
This was a game where pressure was the way to win and 25 minutes in we started to get the upper hand only to miss opportunities to score.
40 minutes in and we scored our first goal, with Alex Moss forcing the ball over the line.
We went into half time 1 nil up and the team was ready to move this forward. The second half started and we had the control only to again miss various opportunities to increase our lead. Dux were not relying on fast breaks and it was one of these that caught us and they ran through and scored.
Quite often a team that concedes a goal drops off and the opposition take control; however this was not to be with the players rallying each other and they drove for a winner. This lead to further breaks by Dux only to stopped by some very good defending and a couple of great saves from Johnny.
From one of these we broke forth and a ball from Andy was headed on by Hayden to wards Alex who ran through and made sure the ball crossed the line for his 2nd of the day. What a time to score with only a few minutes left and this we held onto as the Ref blew the final whistle… result: 2-1 victory.
Many thanks again to the supporters as this is always appreciated by the team.
The down-side was 2 possible serious injuries to players and hopefully the Physio will have them fixed up in no time.
Due to work commitments I have had to relinquish my coaching role for Coastal Spirit Rovers. This has been a most enjoyable position to have and I wish the team all the best for the rest of the year. Over the past couple of years we have had our struggles and our victories of which all lead to great times and I believe that this can be repeated this year.

It starts again and against the old foe Glenbyre.
Those were the words for my first report in 2007 and how true it is again for this year.
The game was a fast-paced one that left no one with any energy left after the 90 minutes. The first few minutes was typical with both teams vying for supremacy. This was to last for about 15-20 minutes with Glenbyre have a couple of chances without success.
After 25 minutes we broke thru with a nice move that combines with Steve Potter scoring his first of 2 goals. We then, after some poor tackling, allowed them back into the game to go into half time at 1 all.
The second half started well and 16 minutes Gary Joynson scored a nice goal. We were dominating the half and looked well placed at 2-1 up.
Gary had his 2nd goal from a corner. The ref allowed the goal however in one of the most honest moves, Gary advised the Ref that the ball went into the goal off his arm and the 3rd goal was reversed and Glenbyre took a free kick. 20 seconds later the ball was in our net and the score 2 all.
This was the turning point and we then conceded a third when they counter attacked a few minutes later.
The players then replied with our 3rd goal for Steve. We had chances and so did they however it is always hard to accept dropped points.
We will regroup and now focus on next week's game against another arch foe Dux de Lux.
Great results for Coastal Spirit Rovers B with a great 2-0 victory over Dux de Lux.
Many thanks again to the supporters as this is always appreciated by the team.

It is that time again when the fishing rod goes away, the boat gets parked up and the training gear gets cleaned off for action.
Coastal Spirit Rovers (formerly New Brighton Rovers) will again attempt to be a force within the Canterbury Sunday Football Leagues.
We have started training and look forward to the start of the leagues on the first weekend after Easter.
At this time we have the majority of players returning and are also looking at gaining further players to assist in being a team that strives to be the best in the league.
The last 2 years have been exceptional for the first team by completing the double (League and Knock-Out) each year. That makes this year even tougher than others as we will be team the others strive to beat.
This year marks another in the illustrious history for the Sunday section. Firstly linking up with New Brighton AFC and then affiliating with them. Now with the merger between New Brighton and Rangers AFC, New Brighton Rovers have taken the name of Coastal Spirit Rovers to continue the quest of being the best Sunday Football Club.
I do look forward to the 2008 season as this will prove if we are the champion team that we all say we are. We need to prove this to ourselves as to come to the end of the season and say… what about? maybe if? Could we have? Etc.
If there is anyone out there who would like to play Sunday Football, please make contact. We are training on Thursday evenings commencing at 6.30pm at Bexley training grounds. The clubrooms are open after trainings for club members and you are all welcome.
