Monique Barker (Coastal Spirit A) was named Girls Tournament MVP.

Sister School Wins National Secondary Schools Title
Gareth Turnbull reports:
Coastal Spirit affiliated school, Marian College have this past week won the national secondary schools title in Napier after beating Epsom Girls' Grammar in a penalty shootout. Four CSFC premier players - Kathryn Van Empel, Hannah Wong, Monique Barker and Maia Vink (Captain), as well as coach Gareth Turnbull were amongst the winning squad.
After competing pool play with wins over Otumoetai 2-1 (Monique Barker 2), St Cuthbert's College 4-1 (Monique Barker 2, Hannah Wong) and a loss to Kamo College 3-5 (Monique Barker 2), Marian qualified second in pool E and reached the round of 16.
The round of 16 game was against winners of Pool C, Tauranga Girls'. 0-0 at the end of normal time meant direct to penalty shootout. With Maia Vink and Kathryn Van Empel slotting their penalties, and ex CSFC goal keeper Megan Shea saving 3, Marian won the shootout 4-2.
The quarter-final match was against very highly rated and Auckland schools champions Mt Albert Grammar. The girls preformed very well, and despite going a goal down early in the second half, finished the game the strongest and equalised late in the match to draw 1-1. With no extra time, penalties would determine who would progress. Maia again led off, followed by Kathryn, and with 3 more saves from Megan meant the girls went on to win 3-1.
After achieving the original objective of making the top 8 and direct qualification for next year's tournament, our attention turned to the NZ age-group stacked private girls soccer academy that is St Peter's of Cambridge (last year's beaten finalist). A handful of these players played for Claudelands Rovers in the NZ Cup semi-final against Western last weekend, so I knew how they would shape up, and with some other scouting during the week I was able to devise a cunning plan. Full credit must go to the girls who stuck to the game plan for the entire match, rocking the star-studded team with 4 first-half goals (Monique Barker 2, Hannah Wong, Maia Vink). We were able to hold on in the second-half to win through to the final 4-2!!!!
The final saw us pitted against defending champions Epsom Girls', who in Annalie Longo had one of the best female players in the country. We used the same plan as in the semi-final that served us so well. That plan, along with the genuine desire to win for their mates, saw a very even final with both teams going toe to toe. After 80 minutes of football and no goals, the girls would have to complete 20 minutes of extra time. With concentration and heart being the two key words for this period, we battled through to the final whistle at 0-0. Penalties would again seal our fate (something we were now very confident at). Maia finished off her high-school career, slotting her third penalty of the week, however Kathryn would see hers saved. Three more Megan Shea saves meant, with the scores level at 2-2, Hannah Wong would score hers to see Marian crowned national champs with a 3-2 win.
Credit goes to all the girls, but in particular Monique Barker who secured team MVP honours, and Megan Shea who won goal keeper of the tournament and final MVP.

Coastal Spirit Appoint New Coach
25 June 2009
Coastal Spirit Football Club have appointed Rob Stanton as Men's 1st team coach for the remainder of the 2009 season. This follows on from the recent appointment of current coach Alan Walker as Mainland Football's Director of Football.
Club Chairman, Wayne McTague, is confident that this is the best possible move for the club at this time.
"I am aware that Alan is still capable of gaining us promotion to the Matson's Premier League at the end of this season. I also know that Alan is bitterly disappointed not to have the opportunity to finish the job he has started in the manner he would have liked, but feel a clean break now is in the best interest of the club. Without question Alan has done a fantastic job on our behalf over the past season and a half and I thank him for that, and also wish him well at Mainland. The fact that many key players in this year's squad stayed on after the disappointment of missing out on promotion last season is solely down to him. He has certainly got the Spirit off to a fantastic start."
Stanton, a former 1st team coach at Western and assistant to Koroush Monsef at Canterbury United last NZFC season will be in charge after the conclusion of the Men's Div 1 game against Cashmere at Bexley.
