Youth Football has a Future
17 June 2008
Coastal Spirit FC was formed in 2008 by bringing together traditional powerhouses of Canterbury football: Rangers AFC and New Brighton AFC. Along with coming under the Linfield Sports umbrella, having a full time Football Development manager, this allows the club to be a leading light for football in our region.
Gareth Turnbull, Coastal Spirit's Football Manager has been working closely with Mainland Football's Youth Development Officer Tim Bush over the past months to complete a formal agreement and partnership with St Bede's College. The benefits from all three parties are clear for all to see. Coastal Spirit will aid in coach, player and referee development all while creating a structured pathway to senior football. St Bede's will be able to use all the resources that Coastal Spirit provide in order to raise the profile of football at the school, while developing their own players, referees and coaches alike.
Mainland sees positives here, such as an increase to retention, attraction and development of players, coaches and referees. Tim Bush believes that the only way for our aspiring youth footballers to improve and stay within the game needs the clubs to support them by providing clear and concise opportunities. Combining our resources, opportunities, facilities and knowledge of the game will increase these vital aspects of youth football. Clubs need to start working with schools of all levels (primary, intermediate and, especially, secondary) and schools need to start working with clubs.
As an old boy of St Bede's College, Turnbull is very excited about the venture. "I'm so passionate about football and development players and coaches. For me to be able to assist my old school to improve the quality of football as well as making the transition from school football to senior football easier is a great opportunity".
This formal agreement is the third such bond between club and school in the South Island, after Halswell and St Andrew's shook hands late last year and Nomads United and Christchurch Boys' High School shook hands early this year. However, what makes this one different is Coastal Spirit look at the players holistically. Coaching, refereeing and player development opportunities are given to those who seek them. To assist this process Coastal have devised an excellent concept that the senior men's and women's 1st XI players are paired up with youth and junior based teams. This is a serious club for serious footballers.

Vacancy: Sunday League Men's First Team Coach
25 April 2008
Sunday League Coach
Due to the unfortunate retirement, due to work commitments, of Barry McTague as coach
of the Sunday League Coastal Spirit Rovers Men's First Team, the Sunday
Committee are looking for a coach to take the team through the
rest of the season. This highly successful team are well
motivated and organised, and will not require too much
discipline or voice box, so fear not the wrath of
ex-professionals. The team is attempting to complete the
treble double - winning both the League and the Bolam Cup for
the third year running. All interested people should
contact Graham Cox on (03) 382-2228.
The Sunday Committee would also like to thank Barry for his
commitment to the team over the previous seasons, it has
been very much appreciated.
Vacancy: Nets and Flags
25 April 2008
Nets and Flags
Coastal Spirit FC is looking for a dedicated person who is able to help
the club out. At present we have a one board member who puts
up all the nets and corner flags every Saturday morning down
at Cuthberts Green for the weekend games. It is organised that
the last team to play there each week brings the nets down
and stores them, this is fine. The club is looking for a
person or two who would like to take on the responsibility
of setting the fields up every Saturday morning. The club is prepared to
look into providing the new staff member with some
reimbursement or provide him/her with apparel. For further
information call or e-mail Gareth Turnbull at Linfield (03) 389-3007.

MPL playoff appeal result
11 March 2008
Coastal Spirit FC's debut in the Mainland Premier League has been delayed by a season due to Burnside FC having greater success in court (regarding player eligibility) than they had on the playing field. Despite Mainland Football advising that all players were cleared to play in the 2007 playoffs, NZ Football overturned their earlier advice with their Appeal Committee decision. This decision has been upheld by the Court for Arbitration in Sport. Coastal Spirit FC men's first team will play in the 2008 Division 1 (the old Qualifying League) with the aim of promotion to the Mainland Premier League for the 2009 season. One question which remains unresolved is: will Burnside continue their claims for there to be automatic relegation/promotion between these divisions?
