Coastal Spirit FC Juniors: Midgets

2008 CSFC in-house competitions: Rules, contacts, draws

Sunday, 11 May 2008 marked the debut of the new Coastal Spirit in-house Midgets. Today we had 76 children, with many of them being new to the club. We had ten mixed 5- and 6-year old teams playing off against each other; as well as fourteen new 3- and 4-year olds in the little midgets match.

It was fantastic to see all the new kids, with all their nervous parents, as the new season kicked off.

Over the next few months, we will be show casing each team with their coaches - so stay tuned for that. I certainly hope that the noise which was generated from the matches this morning continues to ring for many years to come. For the adult members of the club: if you want to see the future of Coastal Spirit, then we would love to see you at Eric Adam Park, 10am each Sunday.

11 May 2008
The day dawned fine and warm today for the first round of the newly developed in-house competition for the 7 and 8 years teams. There are seven teams in our first year, which is very pleasing and can only go from strength to strength. After an official opening from Gareth, welcoming all the players and parents, it was time for the footy to commence. A talking point was from a few of the parents who weren't sure about the size of the goals or the fields. But the kids just love the freedom of a good size pitch and the lure of a larger goal waiting for them to score. All the games were very competitive with many pieces of excellent play and, judging by the cheers of the parents, I feel that Coastal Spirit is onto a winner.

A result today was Phoenix 5 Titans 2. This was an unbelievable start with a goal in the first 15secs after the kick off. I haven't seen a crowd bigger than this for a Coastal Spirit match for any other division. They were very vocal and every piece of good play was cheer and clapped (great stuff).

The second match was between the Stormbreakers and the Dragons. The Stormbreakers took this 3-2. The score reflects the match as this couldn't have been more even. End to end stuff kept the fans on the edge of their seats for the whole match. There was a nice touch in this match, with the Stormbreakers' player Todd scoring the first goal. Todd lost his brother over the summer and I think that one was for him.

The final match was a 3-0 win to the Bumblebees over the Green Goblins. I didn't see a lot of this match but, from what did see, it was also an exciting game with many chances falling to both sides.

So the first round is completed and I think, from talking to many parents and coaches, it was a great success. Big thanks to Steve Ager and Paul Bradshaw for their help setting up the fields. They looked great.

See you all next week - Bruce Hunter
